What is this at Nazareth Boro-Park?

My son and I saw this bird at the Nazareth Boro-Park on Wednesday. Is it a crane? Is it a heron? It was all by itself at the creek.

I think it is either a Snowy Egret or Great White Heron.

An Egret is a type of Heron, so you were kind of right thinking it was a Heron, Debra...

Ya'll are so helpful!

Are these birds common in the area? I'm not sure I've ever seen one before, so I'd probably have the same reaction as Deb, "What is this at Nazareth Boro-Park?"

They are not supposed to be common in the area. But with strange weather patterns brings different birds.

It's an Egret. The Schoeneck creek runs through my yard and I have seen him many times. Allso have a wild Malard family and just yesterday I had a wild turkey stop by! We have 3 pekin ducks as pets and they seem to attract all sorts of friends to the yard! People think I live deep in the woods when I post all these pics on facebook, but I live right in town by the 7-eleven!

It is a Great Egret, not a Snowy Egret. Snowy Egrets are smaller. It is a form of heron. There is a white phase of Great Blue Heron, but only in the Florida Keys.

They are becoming more and more popular in the area, usually stealing the fish out of backyard fish ponds like my parents!

Found out today that it is definitely a Great Egret. My father-in-law looked at my photo and a reference book of birds. The Snowy Egret has a black bill and the Great Egret has a yellow bill. He matched the body as well, so we are now fairly certain it is a Great Egret. Speaking of birds, at Lake Wallenpaupeck earlier this summer I saw one pure white goose with a flock of Canada Geese. The Canada Geese appeared to be protecting him or her. I was in Stratford Ontario last week and the swans were so big that from a distance I thought they might be ride-on toy boats for kids. There was one black swan, too. I had never seen a black swan before.
