What Dr. Seuss Lesson Do You Hope to Teach Your Kids?
Some parenting insights are simple and can be delivered in metered rhyme.
Moms Talk is a weekly feature on all Lehigh Valley Patches in which local parents, caregivers and other members of the community are invited to share opinions and advice on parenting topics.
This week’s Moms Talk question relates to the wisdom of Dr. Seuss:
On Friday, March 2, people across the Lehigh Valley and across the country honored Dr. Seuss' birthday by joining Read Across America day. As part of that celebration, the National Education Association called on book lovers around the nation to take up The Lorax, the popular Dr. Seuss children's book published in 1971 about the lovable creature who fights to save the environment. The Lorax, like all of Seuss’ classic works, holds important lessons for all of us – young and old alike. So here’s what we want to know:
What Dr. Seuss teaching do you hope to pass on to your children? (You are encouraged to answer with your favorite Seuss quote!)
Our Moms Council members include:
- Lisa Amey of Upper Milford Township is a stay-at-home mom to an 8-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl. A past president of the MOMS Club of Emmaus and longtime member of MOPs (Mothers of Preschoolers), Lisa is an Independent Consultant for Arbonne International.

I 've had green eggs and ham in Frankfurt, Deutschland, on a riverboat, for breakfast. They are quite tasty. I just had to try them. Wish I had a receipe.

This is my absolute favorite quote of all time, and one I hope my kids will value as well.
"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." ~ Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

Hands down...."What Was I Scared of?" The book was a gift to my daughter from our dear friend Peg. The story of pale green pants with nobody inside them. A lesson in diversity. "I was just as strange to him as he was strange to me."

This is tough...there are so many to choose from...but I think right now I would pick this one:
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”
― Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself
any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go." from "Oh! The Places You'll Go" Our friend Holly gave this book to my oldest daughter as a high school graduation gift. I'm sure I got more choked up than she did.

I couldn't agree with you more about "oh! The places You'll Go"...."oh, the places you'll go! There is fun to be done! There are points to be scored. There are games to be won." Not to be too simple, but that book has all you need for the journey through life.

Beth, you're so right. All I could think about was "losing my baby to college," but since then she and her sisters have been all over the world, have advanced degrees, professional jobs (with healthcare! success!!) and now have pretty much settled close enough to home to enjoy the grandbabies. Heaven.
