Tell Us: Should Government Crack Down on Junk Food?

Americans agree there's an obesity crisis but they are divided on how much the government should do about it

Those New Year's resolutions to eat healthier and exercise more may already be starting to wane - so what's really to be done about America's worsening obesity crisis?

Some folks are afraid government will take away their guns.

What about their junk food?

A third of people say the government should be deeply involved in finding solutions to the epidemic. A similar proportion want it to play little or no role, and the rest are somewhere in the middle, according to a recent poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

For example, the Food and Drug Administration may make restaurants post calorie counts on their menu - and about 70 percent of people surveyed think that's a good idea.

What common sense measures would you support to help reduce obesity cases? Tell us in the comments section below.

The govt already is cracking down on junk food. They now mandate that a child must take a fruit and veggie at public school lunches or pay .80 cents more for there lunch.

If you consider a jello cup and tater tots as a fruit and vegetable. I think it's about time that people are held accountable for their actions. Lets tax the junk food. Or, better yet-charge them more for healthcare. I am tired of people trying to be "bailed out" for all of the bad choices they have made.

Good, 'cause we & our kids have PROVEN that we need help with helthy eating. That's what our gov't is for - to take care of us, especially when we've proven we can't, ourselves. A++ U. S. A !

Maybe you could request a copy from your kids school and take it to the schoolboard. Just a sugguestion since.they seem not to be following

I was just using that as an example-from a school with a lunch that is 100% subsidized. I pack my childs lunch. In general, though, the school lunch is loaded with sodium and carbs. No, it's not junk food, but also not the greatest food either. And, what act are you referring to?

And, let me clarify, that I am by no means bashing the School Lunch Program-without it, there would be a lot of hungry kids out there. It just seems that with all the resources we have in this country, we should be paying particular attention to school lunches and offering better and better options for children, both paying and subsidized. After all, it is an investment in our future-starting now. But, as with so many of these things, it requires more money. And, where does that come from.

Our school calls it the school lunch act, new this year. The problem we have is by the weeks end the fresh fruit is no longer fresh. Brown bananas etc. And I agree school lunches need a huge makeover. The problem is the school is trying to keep it affordable.

Teaching children how to read and interprte nutritional labeling will educate and show them how to make better food choices. Expalining the ingredients in junk food sugar cereals , and prepacked foods is a positive and longlasting tool in fighting obesity. Leave gov't to do what it supposed to do govern not babysit.

While walking thru the farm show food court, noticed that the majority of food being eaten was fried - even tho the vendors offerred many healthy choices for the same price. What if insurance rates were higher for those considered obese (of which I am one)? Would that incent people to reduce, choose healthier foods?

No, they would file suit on grounds of discrimination. See folks, we had a healthy society of persons watching thier weight and diet. Somewhere between people who were whining about Barbie and I cant help it, it was lost. The government doesnt control what goes IN your mouth, YOU DO.

Jason, I could not agree more. The govt. needs to stay out of this. If people want to kill themselves with sugar, fat and carbs that is their right. I'd also like to get rid of govt. paying to manage the health ills these poor choices cause. That too should be a responsibility of the person[s] making those choices in the first place. "The devil made me do it" is not an excuse...it's an explanation. Blaming advertising or food store displays is a cop-out. It's 2013. There is plenty of information out there. Work it out yourself.

The government needs to stay out of all aspects of our lives. Who the hell is Mayor Bloomberg banning 20 ounce sodas's? ...Or "this restaurant has too much sodium" in their food"?. This is progressive liberal philosophy that needs to be squashed at all costs.I would tell Bloomberg top go F--- himself straight to his face if I saw him walking the streets of NY

Regarding Obesity in Children. This is a PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY. Teach them at a young age how to eat. Keep sweets to a minimum. If Parents cannot lead by example that no Liberal is going to do anything about controlling their obesity.Liberal Progressives are good at shirking responsibility where they are concerned but want to control everyone else's lives.

Mr. SOMMERS, I mean no disrespect whatsoever sir. On that note I ask you to review, and then refrain from what is a problem, the assignment of titles. In order to divide a people, a point must be found from which division can be started. Please review the definitions of undisciplined and self control. These are just a few of the things our society today have begun to lack. Which in turn has led to a reluctance to self think and accept responsibility. While a group of people may be recognized for certain traits, it is each person who is recognized for thier actions.

Just a followoup to my earlier post. Indeed insurance companies do charge more for insurance if you are classified as obese - for individual policies, but not under group policies. When my sister retired from nursing and had to secure her own medical insurance, her previous provider quoted a much higher rate than what she was paying under the group rate because she was overweight. She ended up going elsewhere and buying less coverage so as to afford a policy.

No, the government should crack down on illegal immigration and enforce the laws that are already the books. They haven't even passed a budget in the last 4 years!

I have 4 children. 2 are at college now. I have made my kids lunches all these years. I choose to make ther lunches. If you worry that much about what your child eats..PACK THEIR LUNCH! Personal responsibility man! Give me a break! The same people that want to ban certain foods are the ones that want to legalize weed and put condoms in midde schools. You people are so screwed up. You are trying to bring all of us down!
