Nazareth Students Participate in Day of Service with Red Cross

Members of Nazareth Area High School's Red Cross Club canvassed sections of Nazareth and Upper Nazareth to hand out fire prevention tips.

Four Nazareth Area High School students were among 30 Red Cross Club members in the Lehigh Valley who honored Martin Luther King's memory by participating in a day of service.

The youth volunteers distributed fire safety information to help residents in the Nazareth, Parkland and Lehighton school districts prevent home fires, protect their loved ones and strengthen their communities, according to a press release from the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley.

The release adds, "Home fires are the most prevalent disaster threat in the greater Lehigh Valley. Last year [July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011], the Red Cross responded to 92 fires, assisting 121 families in Carbon, Lehigh and Northampton counties."

The four Nazareth students (Paige Hawk, Abi Vanover, Megan Hrycyszyn and Conner Nickerson) -- and one student from Easton Area High School (Yuvraj Rathore) -- had two routes, which covered parts of the borough and Upper Nazareth Township.

They left door hangers that featured information about:

  • Smoke alarms
  • How to create a household fire escape plan
  • Tips for cooking and heating a home safely during the winter months

Amy Tashner is the adviser of the Red Cross Club. She also assisted during the day of service.
