Does Emmaus have any shelters, if things get really bad ????? The movie theatre would seem like a safe place....

Hi Lyle -- According to the Emmaus Fire Dept., no official shelter locations have been selected yet. Tentative locations have been identified, but the weather hasn't gotten bad enough yet for any definite shelters to be named. If emergency management personnel decide shelters are warranted, there will be signs posted on the streets in Emmaus, as well as announcements made on radio, Channel 69 News, etc., and on Patch.

It would be great if the officials of Emmaus would make arrangements for a shelter AHEAD of a disaster! When we lose power, it does us no good if shelter locations are announced in the media or online. People won't hear it!! If signs are posted around town DURING a storm, who would see it if we're all stuck indoors or not out and about in that particular area? Ideas for a shelter: churches, fire companies, large businesses with empty areas (such as Rodale on 6th Street!), school gymnasiums. The movie theater isn't a good idea since its too full of small cramped seats. No room for cots if needed. Not enough bathrooms either.

South Whitehall is opening a shelter at Orefield Middle School, by 8:45 p.m. for the county. In response to residents' concerns that folks would have a place to go, if necessary, particularly those in mobile homes. South Whitehall's working in conjunction with Upper Mac, Red Cross, Lehigh County EM Man, and C.E.R.T.

There is also a shelter being opened in Whitehall, I believe at the HIgh School. In Northampton County, the only shelter that is open is in Bethlehem.

I haven't received any reports of flooding in those areas yet. At this point I think we'll have to wait till morning to see the impact of the rainfall, unless someone has observed flooding along Meadows or Walnut. At this point I hope everyone is home and dry!

Creek Road, which is north of Water Street just outside of Hellertown, is flooding and slowly becoming impassible, and the Saucon Creek is starting to flood out into the field between itself and Creek Road. I can only assume that it is flooding areas of a similar height in relation to it downstream.

Power went out for me in Emmaus at 12:15am and didn't come back up until 3:15 today. It went out for a minute or two later at 5pm but came back up right away. Shortly after that we got a phone message from PPL asking people to be patient, that there will still be power problems on and off tonight. So don't put those flashlights or candles away yet folks!

Folks, DON'T ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THROUGH WATER COVERED ROADWAYS! Six inches of water can strand your vehicle, 18 or less can carry it (and you) away....

BTW, scanner report update indicates the driver was rescued, and the car was left behind until the water recedes. That will probably be late tomorrow, based on the location.
Hope it wasn't a very nice car, or there wasn't anything important in there...
Something to keep in mind--emergency personnel are very busy this morning, and they don't have time to save cars when people ignore road closures or disregard common sense.

In many municipalities across Northampton County, basement pump out calls are piling up, and county dispatch is beginning to fax the lists to the fire departments.
If your basement is flooding and your sump pump can't keep up, or your power is out, it would be a good idea to call your problem in and get in line now...

If you need ice for your food, Giant on Emmaus Ave ran out of ice this morning. Redner's on Lehigh Street had no power. I got my ice at the convenience store behind the McDonald's on Lehigh Street but they didnt' have much left. You might have to drive to another town to find ice. Remember Emmaus wasn't the only community to lose power and other people might have bought up all the ice and some stores might be closed.

I'd like to know why there were kids running up our street behind Jefferson Elementary School, yelling like banshees, at 1am when the hurricane was at its worst. My husband and I jumped out of bed, ready to call 911 cus we thought someone was injured.

Where were the parents? These kids weren't educated in the dangers of running around in the middle of a hurricane? If any of the wires were in the water, they could have stepped on them! There were lightning dangers too. There were sharp objects in the water that they could have injured themselves on.

C'mon people!! Instruct your children better and lay some ground rules when there is an emergency like this. >_<
