Bushkill Township's Kate Micucci Stops By For Story Time
The actress, singer, songwriter and comedian kept her promise to read to the area’s little ones.
Sometimes, it really is who you know.
After Hollywood actress and Bushkill Township native Kate Micucci led the 2010 kazoo parade through Nazareth, Alice Yeakel, a volunteer at the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity, seized an opportunity.
Yeakel knew Micucci before she found fame as Stephanie Gooch, the love interest of lawyer Ted Buckland on the television series "Scrubs." When Micucci was little, she and her mother, Lynne, would head to the library and listen to Yeakel tell stories.
After the parade, Yeakel asked Micucci, a 1998 graduate of Nazareth Area High School, if she would read to area children at story time.
And this past Thursday morning, Micucci did just that.
“I said yes, not really knowing what I was saying yes to, but I’m really glad I did,” Micucci said, joking that this was her first library tour.
With a room full of toddlers, preschoolers and parents, Micucci led story time. When she was finished, she broke out her ukulele -- the same one she played on “Scrubs.”
Some of the children just couldn’t sit still, so they stood up and danced to a song Micucci wrote, titled “My Moon.”
The fun didn’t stop there. Micucci and her mom, a nursery school teacher, led the group in singing childhood favorites like “The Wheels on the Bus” and “The Bumblebee Song.” They rounded out story time with kazoo playing and pictures with Micucci.
“There were a lot of children here, which is good for the library," said Catherine Stewart, the children's librarian.
The library holds eight story time sessions. Six sessions are at the 295 E. Center St. location and two are at the Lower Nazareth Township municipal building, according to Stewart.
Yeakel isn’t the only volunteer to lead story time, but she has been telling stories the longest. Yeakel said it amazes her how fast time flies -- she's had several former story time children come back as adults with children of their own.
When it came to Micucci, remembered Yeakel, she was a bubbly, smiley, good-natured and very happy little girl.
“When my children were very, very young, I thought nurturing was important and I exposed them to the arts," said Lynne Micucci.
Micucci added that the routine was acting classes, library and piano lessons.
“Reading was always important,” Kate Micucci said. “We’re lucky, my brother and I. Thank you, mom.”
After graduating from Nazareth, Micucci headed to California, where she pursued her love of comedy, songwriting and acting.
In addition to her portrayal of Stephanie Gooch on "Scrubs," Micucci has most recently played the part of Shelly, an owner of a baby and doggie daycare center, on Fox’s sitcom “Raising Hope.”
Micucci is also a member of the duo touring group Garfunkel and Oates. She describes the duo as two girls singing songs about dating ups and downs.
