- Name: Christ Lutheran Church of Lower Saucon
- Occasion: Dramatic Performance of Mark's Gospel
The Gospel According to Saint Mark in a reprise performance of a one-man show produced by the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival this past summer. This program is more than a bible recitation. It is a unique blend of storytelling and drama, based on the King James Version of the Gospel; one that has received many accolades and critical acclaim!
Emmy Award Winner, Wayne S. Turney, who will perform the entire Gospel of Mark, has observed," Too often we read the Bible in short spurts and we miss the
story -- the context. In delving for pearls of wisdom, we miss the boat. A great deal can be learned by hearing the whole story in one sitting--seeing the sweep of Jesus' baptism, ministry, crucifixion and resurrection."
Audiences laugh, some may cry, all will say we were enthralled and engaged -- by the story and the story teller!
Mark's Gospel is the earliest of the four Gospels and was probably used by both Matthew and Luke when they composed their distinctive versions of Jesus' life. But, Mark's Gospel is uniquely an "oral" document, which is to say that it was not carefully written down paying attention to niceties of style and form. It is rather an eye witness account, enlivened with seemingly extraneous details that make the story more "real." Mark told his story in about 60 AD, just a few years after Christ’s Resurrection. So tonight, imagine that you are in that crowd in a small middle eastern village waiting to hear the Good News of the Galilean.
Christ Lutheran Church of Lower Saucon is offering this performance to raise funds for its mission and ministries. The key ministries benefitting from the performance are twofold: the Hellertown Area Ministerium (H.A.M.) CRISIS Fund, from which all the H.A.M. churches are able to draw funds to help community members who seek assistance; and the ELCA 100 Well Challenge, which focuses on providing clean water to people who live in poverty around the world, including in the U.S.A.
Join us to hear the story and to support these important initiatives. You will agree that it is an amazing story and that the storyteller has brought the story to you in a new and engaging way -- you will be messmerized!
